Gen Con 2023: Networking, Insights, and Unexpected Discoveries
Freshly returned from Gen Con 2023, I find myself in dire need of a breather after several days of immersion in the whirlwind that is this colossal event. With over 15,000 steps a day becoming the norm, I can’t deny that some quiet time to decompress at home is welcome.
A Different Mission:
While I wish I could say I played all kinds of fun new games, my purpose for attending Gen Con this year was distinct. I was on a mission to not only familiarize myself with the TTRPG industry but also to forge connections with the game-changers in the field. Specifically, I aimed to network with potential podcast guests – established personalities in the realm of TTRPGs. This endeavor, as you’ll soon see, turned out to be quite an undertaking.
Key Takeaways:
As I reflect on my Gen Con experience, a few key takeaways come to mind, each shedding light on a different facet of the journey:
The Quest for Accommodation:
Securing a hotel room amid the Gen Con frenzy proved to be an adventure in itself. Despite my last-minute booking, I managed to find a haven within walking distance – the Tru by Hilton hotel. The hotel’s immersive engagement with the Gen Con community was evident from the start. A playful welcome packet, complete with dragon stickers and event information, set the tone for a remarkable stay. A dice tower in the lobby and even a group D&D game were but a few of the engaging touches that left a lasting impression.
Unexpected Connections:
Gen Con’s magic lies not only in its games but also in the people it gathers. A seemingly spontaneous encounter at a picnic table led to a delightful evening at Goodwood in Downtown Indy, spent with individuals closely tied to Goodman Games and Darrington Press. These serendipitous meetings highlighted the spirit of camaraderie that saturates the event.
Navigating the Vendor Hall:
Most of Thursday, Friday, and part of Saturday were dedicated to navigating the expansive vendor hall, engaging business owners, and identifying potential podcast guests. While the chaos of the vendor hall made networking a challenge, I managed to seize a few precious moments with several vendors. Despite the frenzied atmosphere, I cultivated promising connections that I’m genuinely proud of.
Gooey Cube and Charismatic Leadership:
Among the standout discoveries was Gooey Cube, a company that left an indelible mark. Not only was their CEO, Alphinius Goo, seemingly blessed with a +5 Charisma, but his commitment to fostering a vibrant and passionate team culture was inspiring. Witnessing his genuine appreciation for his team members solidified my loyalty as a lifelong Gooey Cube supporter.
Inclusivity and Empowerment:
The Gen Con atmosphere resonated with inclusivity and support for the LGBTQIA+ community. The presence of ALLY pins and badge ribbons exemplified a commitment to making the event a safe and welcoming space. The TableTop Gaymers group was instrumental in championing this cause.
Towards Future Ventures:
As I evaluate the extent to which I achieved my primary objective, valuable lessons have been gleaned. The need for smaller spaces and opportunities to create intimate conversations and meaningful connections has become evident. The vast vendor hall, though teeming with opportunities, is far from conducive to effective networking. Armed with the knowledge of the key players I intend to engage with, I’m primed to refine my approach for future Gen Con ventures.
Gen Con 2023 was a whirlwind of encounters, insights, and unexpected joys. As I unpack the experiences, it’s evident that while my journey held its challenges, the rewards were numerous. From forging connections to uncovering hidden gems, I return with a trove of knowledge and connections that will undoubtedly shape the future of The Daily Druid and the TableTop Commerce Guild.
